Aero-elastic behavior of high-rise buildings under downstream interference effects

本文摘要There have been extensive discussions on shielded or amplified structural responses caused by interference effects and various methodologies, such as wind tunnel test, computing fluid dynamic simulation, visualization, and so on, were adopted for explanation of the interference mechanism. However, the traditional viewpoint toward the interference focus on the upstream building, which generates vortex in its wake to change the flow pattern around the downstream principal building and then results in a different dynamic response behavior. This research is mainly focused on the interfered aero-elastic behavior of the principal building with an existing interfering building in the downstream. Aero-elastic vibration test and high-force-balance test were conducted in a boundary layer wind tunnel with a well simulated flow condition. Three principal models (with squared, tapper-squared, and helical tapper-squared cross sections) were manufactured for investigation on interference effect reduction due to building shapes. A wide range of reduced velocity was attempted for an overall view on their vibration characteristics. Other experimental results were also checked for comparison with literature. From the preliminary experimental results, it was found that, an increased across-wind response of the principal building with the interference from the downstream, say one building-width distance behind, was even larger than from the upstream. Different flow-induced vibration mechanisms were then explained by means of smoke visualization tests and CFD tools for perceivable understanding.
